About this tool

Word & Character Counter

This counter gives you live statistics as you type or paste text: word count, character count (with and without spaces), sentence count, paragraph count, reading time, and an approximate speaking time.

Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute, the standard average for adult reading. Speaking time uses a slower ~130 words per minute to reflect spoken delivery.

Everything runs locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and the tool works fully offline.

Most word counters are wrappers around a length property, and they disagree with each other on the edge cases: whether 'state-of-the-art' is one word or five, whether a standalone hyphen counts, how URLs, code snippets, and contractions are treated. This one counts words as whitespace-separated sequences — the same rule most word processors use — so the number you see here matches the number a submission form or a manuscript counter expects. Contractions ('don't') and hyphenated compounds count as single words; any run of non-whitespace characters is one word.

Beyond the headline number, the distribution matters when you're editing: sentence count and paragraph count tell you whether a piece that 'feels long' is actually one 90-word paragraph or ten short ones, and the reading-time estimate is the honest test for whether a draft fits its slot — a script, a talk, a newsletter issue.

When to use it

  • Meet a word limit

Track your word count live while writing an essay, article, or description to stay under a required limit.

  • Estimate how long a piece takes to read

See an estimated reading time so you know whether a post, script, or presentation is the right length for its audience.

  • Count characters for a constrained field

Check the character count (including or excluding spaces) against a tweet, SMS, or database column limit.

Questions

How many words are in this paragraph?

Paste the paragraph in and the counter shows the word count instantly — that's what the tool is for. There's no fixed answer per paragraph: a typical paragraph runs 40–80 words, but anything between 1 and 200+ is normal. If you need a count for a specific paragraph, paste just that paragraph.

How many words is this text?

Paste the text in — the word count updates live as you type or paste, no button to press. Anything you paste stays in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

How much word is this?

Paste your text and read the 'Words' figure at the top of the stats. The counter also shows characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, reading time, and speaking time.

How long is 1750 characters?

Roughly 290 words, using the standard average of ~6 characters per word including spaces. The exact number depends on the text: average English words are about 5 letters, and spaces add one character per word. Paste 1750 characters in and the counter gives you the exact word count plus reading time — about a minute and a half at the 200-words-per-minute reading average.

How many words can you speak in 60 seconds?

About 130 words, at the average speaking rate of 130 words per minute. Most speakers land between 120 and 150. That's why the speaking-time stat above uses ~130 wpm — a 60-second pitch is a 130-word script.

How many words is this speech?

Paste the speech text in and check 'Speaking time' — it estimates delivery length at ~130 words per minute. For a 5-minute speech, aim for roughly 650 words; 10 minutes is about 1,300.

How many letters are in the average word?

About 5 letters for average English prose text. That implies ~6 characters per word once you count the space after it, which is the conversion this FAQ uses: characters ÷ 6 ≈ words.

How is reading time calculated?

Word count divided by 200 words per minute, the standard adult reading average. Speaking time uses ~130 words per minute.

What counts as a word?

Any sequence of non-whitespace characters. Contractions and hyphenated terms count as single words.

Does the character count include spaces?

The 'Characters' count includes spaces; 'Characters (no spaces)' strips all whitespace. Use whichever matches your constraint.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. All counting happens locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and the tool works offline.

How many words is 1000 characters?

About 140–200 words, assuming ordinary prose with spaces counted. Denser text (long words, little punctuation) lands near 140; airy copy with short words lands near 200.

How many words in 60 seconds?

About 130 words per minute of speaking, so one minute of talk is roughly 130 words — this counter's speaking-time estimate runs at that rate. Paste your script and match the speaking time to your slot; conversational delivery stretches toward 150, a deliberate delivery drops to 110.

How many pages is 500 words?

Roughly 1–2 pages: single-spaced 12-point text runs about 500 words per page, double-spaced about 250. Word count is the reliable unit — page count depends on font, margins, and spacing that vary per document.

How do I count words in a long document?

Paste the whole thing — there's no upload and no size gate, so a full chapter or report works the same as a paragraph. Everything is counted in your browser, so long documents stay private and work offline.

Does the counter distinguish sentences from paragraphs?

Yes. Sentences are counted by terminal punctuation (. ! ?), paragraphs by blank-line breaks. A single-line block of text counts as one paragraph no matter how many sentences it holds — break it into blank-line-separated blocks to see the paragraph count move.

How long is my text?

Length is more than one number, so the counter gives you all of them at once: words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, reading time, and speaking time. Paste the text and every figure updates live — 'how long' for a script means speaking time, for an essay it usually means word count, and both are on the same readout.

How many words should a story be?

It depends on the form: flash fiction runs under 1,000 words, a short story is typically 1,000–7,500 words, and a novella starts around 20,000. Paste your draft here and compare the word count against your target — the paragraph and sentence counts also tell you whether the pacing matches the length.
